The Salida Oral History Project is preserving the history and heritage of Salida through interviews of long-time residents and other knowledgeable people who have lived and worked in the area. People share stories of their childhood, schooling, family, church, outings, celebrations, friends, hobbies, and events that still live in their memories. The interviews will be kept forever so that others can learn from these true historians' words.
Maybe you know of some prospective interviewees...or, would you like to be interviewed? Salida Regional Library's Archive is organizing and promoting this project. Earle Kittleman, who is on the board of Historic Salida, Inc. and the Salida Museum, is helping coordinate the project. Karin Chapman is a professional historian specializing in oral history, specifically, ethnic groups, railroad, mining and immigrant labor. Vic Mabus, Archive Librarian, is in charge of preserving the interviews. Katy Grether is on the Board of the Hutchinson Ranch, Historic Salida, Inc., and SPOT (Salida area Parks, Open spaces and Trails).
If you would like to learn about conducting interviews, transcribing or helping out with other various tasks, please call the Library, 719-539-4826.
The Oral History Project is co-sponsored by The Salida Regional Library and Historic Salida, Inc., and is composed mostly of volunteers.
Salida's own Kathy Berg is featured on the Voice of America.
